Schedule & Activities

Multi-day, overnight adventures very greatly depending on the location. The format follows a set standard to hike anywhere from 2-4 trails in the location, mixed in with numerous activities throughout each day. Late afternoons on the first day we focus on skill building with tent pitching, everyone pitching in for camp dinner, and of course how to make the perfect s'more. Park fees are included in registration.

Locations vary every month, but have included Shenandoah National Park, Catoctin Mountain, First Landing State Park, and more!

Activities vary by day, age & group interest, all rooted in discovery, problem-solving, and creativity:

  • Location specific activities (example: First Landing State Park, crab searching night activity on the beach!)
  • Arts & crafts including making nature collages, building beetle forts, and mud painting
  • Trail bingo, scavenger hunts, "build-a-story" time while we hike, animal charades and more!

Schedule outlines will be found in the details of the specific program for the month! Head to the program registration page to learn more.

*You will receive an email a week before your camp is set to start that includes the full Program Overview with specific location & contact information, along with a list of what to bring!

Packing List

A full list of what explorers need to bring will be provided upon registration for each specific program as items vary based on the location, season and weather forecast.

We are also working on building out a rental package program for the bigger gear necessities involved in camping overnight (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, etc). Stay tuned as we take some time to bring that to life for explorers to access great gear with ease.

Age Groups

All ages, from 5 to 14 year olds, are welcome to come out with us on an adventure! We develop our programming by age to ensure the best experience as we can tailor to age appropriate activities, and hiking distances.

Sprouts

  • 5-6 year olds
  • Hike around 1 mile per day

Saplings

  • 7-8 year olds
  • Hike around 1-2 miles daily

Buds

  • 9-11 year olds
  • Hike around 3-4 miles daily

Blossoms

  • 12-14 year olds
  • Hike around 4-6+ miles daily

These hiking distances are based on industry averages for what these age groups can achieve; we usually include what we'd call an "advanced" section of a lower age group for Multi-Day, Overnight programs if a young explorer feels up for bigger days and would like to come along! These are always indicated on the program registration details.

Pick-up & Drop-off

This will vary based on the location, and we will list these locations in the event details. For example, if you are signing up for a program that picks up from the Maret School, Grown Outdoors will pick up your registered explorer from Maret, and we will return your registered explorer to Maret for parent pick-up when the program wraps for the day.

Transportation & Safety

Buses will pick-up and drop off explorers from the designated pick-up and drop-off location detailed in the event. They will be accompanied by a counselor on the bus, throughout the entirety of the program, and while transitioning on/off the bus for pick-up and drop-off.

Explorer to counselor ratio is 1 counselor minimum to every 6 explorers.
